Ebert Mayo provided services for building renovations and a roof replacement, both part of a $5 million bond issue improvement plan for Southeast of Saline K-12 School.
Southeast of Saline K-12 School was constructed in 1978 and the science classrooms had not been renovated since the original design. The layouts were not ideal for current teaching standards and safety requirements in science labs, and the casework and finishes were outdated and past their useful life. An existing greenhouse was removed and a new Prep Room constructed in its place. This allowed the existing Prep Room space to be integrated into larger Chemistry and Biology classrooms. New lab casework, fume hoods, and interior finishes were part of the project.
Other building renovations included creating a secured building entrance and door and window replacements throughout the building.
The 117,000 square foot roof over the K-12 school was experiencing periodic leaks due to a combination of inadequate roof slope for drainage and a deteriorating roofing membrane. To address the inadequate roof drainage as well as energy conservation a tapered insulation system was added. The new tapered insulation allows less water to pond before overflowing, and new overflow drains were added at the perimeter of the building to address clogged drains or intense downpours. The new roofing membrane is a white 80-mil fleece-backed thermoplastic polyolefin. This membrane provides superior resistance to damage from hail, reflects solar radiation to reduce energy costs, and has a 30-year manufacturer's warranty. It is likely that the roof will last 40 years, which is much longer than the 20 year life of other roofing systems. The cost for the thicker roof membrane added only 3% to the reroofing cost, but doubles the roof life thereby having an excellent return on investment for the District's taxpayers.
