Flint Hills Job Corps Center - Manhattan, Kansas
15,800 Square Feet
The Flint Hills Job Corps Center is part of a nationwide network of vocational education campuses administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. Opened in 1992, the Center has functioned successfully for many years and continues to see enrollment growth. Ebert Mayo designed the original gymnasium facility, as well as an addition to meet the growing needs for additional recreation opportunities for the student residents.
The Center's primary facilities include:
  • NCAA regulation size basketball court
  • Weight training room
  • Men's and Women's locker/shower rooms
  • Bleachers seating 300 spectators
The 2,400 square foot addition provides flexible facilities for:
  • Socializing, TV viewing and computer gaming
  • Pool, ping-pong and fooseball
  • Arts and crafts instruction
  • Concessions and restrooms to support gymnasium events
The exterior character was designed for compatibility with the center's historic precedent - a 1913 retirement home and "orphanage." Located between two original structures, the center reflects their bungalow and craftsmen style architecture.
