BERNEY FAMILY WELCOME CENTER
Kansas State University - Manhattan, Kansas
160,000 Square Feet
Memorial Stadium, a campus icon constructed circa 1922, has undergone major repair, renovation, and restoration work to function as the true "front door" to student life at K-State. East Stadium now houses the new "Welcome Center" for prospective students and families visiting the campus. They can learn about opportunities and student life at K-State as well as traditions, history, and the future direction of the University.
Located adjacent to, and associated with, the Welcome Center on the south end of the structure is New Student Services. Services for incoming students (such as housing, loans, transition counseling, and non-traditional student assistance, etc.) are housed in the department. Located on the north end of the structure is the Career Center, which offers career exploration and assists graduating students in their transition into the workforce. The central core of the building houses the shared spaces utilized by both departments, including conference rooms, work rooms, break rooms, toilets, storage and 25 private interview rooms.
The limestone building shell required extensive restoration and the tiered seating received insulation with a vegetated (green) roof. Extensive technology throughout the building is interactive and allows remote scheduling, interviews and other functions. The Theater is equipped with surround sound audio and a large screen video with broadcast and recording capabilities.
The project received the Award of Excellence in its category and was also selected as the Judges Choice winner by the Association of General Contractors of Kansas.
