MARLATT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Unified School District 383 - Manhattan, Kansas
60,000 Square Feet
As part of a district $97.5 Million bond issue improvement plan, Marlatt Elementary was expanded by 16,800 square feet. New additions include a Gymnasium and Classroom Wing. The existing 43,800 square foot school received security, aesthetic, environmental and life safety improvements including installation of a fire sprinkler system. Renovations also included development of grade and subject-specific spaces for art, music and computers as well as a kindergarten wing and special needs suite.
The design allows for after-hours use of gymnasium and cafeteria spaces while not compromising security in the rest of the building.
Placement of the additions on the site were done to maintain existing setbacks and open space. Due to the sloping site and location of the large classroom addition, it was possible to create a "walk-out" lower level. The lower level houses a mechanical room and storm shelters with enough capacity to protect the entire Marlatt Elementary School population during a threatening weather event. Areas for future building additions were also considered and kept clear of utilities and other items.
